Class Two

Our second in-world class took place on May 17th. We began class at 10 am SLT (1 PM EST), but today we added voice and boy did that add to the length of time it took to get us all “on board” and going! There was a lot of troubleshooting. What eventually worked for us was for the class to all become Active Speakers, but not actively “talk.” We checked the “talk” button at the bottom right of our screen and made sure we did not have the green voice icon on. That made the background noise, static and reverberation disappear. Only Esme our teacher was speaking. By 10:08 my avatar was dancing – she must have the same inability that I do to sit still for very long. There are many dance animations available. Thirty minutes later all troubleshooting had stopped. We noticed that little green speakers showed us which avatars were speaking, that way we did not have to say “This is so-and-so.”

The class was asked what the hardest thing about Second Life was:

[10:44] You: remembering how to move around

[10:44] Reginald Devin: finding places to visit

[10:44] Eruditus Drut: Avoiding avatars I don't know.. I'm shy.

[10:44] Kinsey Kornfeld: Not knowing how to find everyone else and the camera shots

[10:44] Micina Cham: realizing I am not as good at computers as I thought I was.

[10:45] Bigpickb Branner: Trying to figure out where I am! - And where everybody else is, too!

[10:45] Erika Thursday: finding the time to get into SL(school closes for student on Tuesday and all that it implies)

[10:45] Ebliu Maktoum: getting time to spend inworld

[10:45] Verbena Zerbino: spending too much time here, lol

[10:45] Ebliu Maktoum: finding a specific script

[10:45] Text Timeless: the hardest thing for me is staying away when I'm supposed to be studying

[10:45] Pamet Heron: frustration with how to move and get around I was not very good in kindergarten either new things are tough

[10:45] Shailey Garfield: Not finding enough time to practice

[10:45] Bigpickb Branner: Trying to control my movement - I can't figure out how to go higher!

[10:45] Bigpickb Branner: How to communicate with people -

[10:46] Tiernan Maimann: Not having great facility with moving and the means of interacting in SL has been a little frustrating for me, but I'm having fun experiencing the world in the same way that my students, who have significant learning challenges, do.

[10:46] Pamet Heron: finding time

[10:47] Shailey Garfield: keeping up with Moodle discussion has been hard

[10:47] Micina Cham: being scared to meet people that aren't classmates

[10:47] Kinsey Kornfeld: using the maps

[10:47] Shailey Garfield: would like to contribute more

[10:47] Text Timeless: multitasking

[10:47] Bigpickb Branner: I'm having fun but really don't know what I'm doing!

[10:47] Verbena Zerbino: i found that once I mastered flying, the rest of movement fell into place

We then spent time learning how to modify our appearance. To do this you simply right-click on your avatar and click “appearance” in the pie chart to get the menu for changing everything from eye color to clothing:
